Foreshocks and Aftershocks of Magnitude 5.3 COLORADO Earthquake, 2011 August 23

An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 hit Colorado 11:46 p.m. MDT Monday with two foreshocks and seven aftershocks so far. The quake was felt in a relatively large area of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico.

Colorado authorities were assessing damage and so far had reported a porch collapse and a partially collapsed roof. No injuries had been reported so far. Earthquake damaged chimneys, cracked walls and knocked items off shelves. It shaked everything but had no power loss.

A few homes were damaged and there were rockslides on Colorado Highway 12 and Interstate 25, but both highways remained open.
